Empowering independence, purpose, and opportunity through employment support
Each year, National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) honors the contributions of workers with disabilities and highlights the importance of inclusive workplaces. While NDEAM is recognized nationally each October, at Northeast Independent Living Services (NEILS), we celebrate and support disability employment all year long, including here in November.
Work is about more than a paycheck. It provides purpose, connection, confidence, and community. For individuals with disabilities across Northeast Missouri, meaningful employment strengthens independence and creates opportunities for long-term success. NEILS is proud to help make that possible.

Why Employment Matters for People with Disabilities
For many individuals, employment plays a key role in overall well-being. Work can:
- Increase financial independence
- Improve confidence and self-esteem
- Strengthen community engagement
- Provide daily structure and purpose
- Encourage personal growth and social connection
Yet barriers such as transportation, accessibility, and lack of workplace accommodations can make finding and maintaining employment more challenging. That’s where NEILS steps in to help.
How NEILS Supports Disability Employment in Northeast Missouri
At NEILS, our mission is to empower independence, and employment is a major part of that independence journey. Through our programs and services, we support job seekers with disabilities by helping them build skills, find resources, and access the right supports to thrive in the workforce.
Skills, Confidence & Daily Living Support
Our Home Care Services and Consumer-Directed Services help individuals receive support at home so they can focus on their goals, including preparing for and sustaining employment. Whether it’s assistance with personal care routines, building life skills, or arranging transportation, NEILS provides the support foundation needed to succeed.
Transition Support for New Career Paths
For individuals transitioning out of care facilities and back into the community, NEILS offers a Nursing Home Transition Program that helps secure housing, develop support plans, and establish independence, including stepping into educational or employment opportunities whenever possible.
Advocacy & Empowerment
NEILS also helps individuals learn to advocate for themselves in the workplace, from requesting reasonable accommodations to understanding employment rights under the ADA. Because knowing your rights is a powerful tool in building a successful career.
Inclusive Workplaces Benefit Us All
Hiring individuals with disabilities isn’t just the right thing to do; it’s smart business. Employers who create inclusive teams benefit from:
- Diverse perspectives and problem-solving approaches
- Strong employee loyalty and retention
- A culture of empathy and teamwork
- Broader talent pipelines
- Improved workplace innovation
NDEAM is a reminder: when our workforce includes everyone, our communities grow stronger.
Empower Your Path to Independence
Whether you’re exploring career options, building confidence for work, or seeking support to balance employment with daily needs, NEILS is here every step of the way. Because everyone deserves the opportunity to work, grow, and contribute. With the right support, independence is possible.
