National Healthcare Decision Day (NHDD) is observed annually on April 16. The goal of NHDD is to educate the public about the options that exist in advance planning for healthcare through the end of life. Many options are available, but Northeast Independent Living Services (NEILS) makes the process easier to understand and digest.

Choosing In-Home Services for Greater Independence

For many individuals, staying in the comfort of their own home is the preferred choice when considering long-term care options. NEILS offers In-Home Services that allow folks to maintain their independence while still receiving the necessary care and assistance. These services include personal care, housekeeping, meal preparation, and medication management. 

By providing these supports, NEILS helps individuals avoid unnecessary nursing home placements and maintain a sense of dignity and autonomy.

Supporting Veterans Through Veteran’s Home Care

Veterans who require assistance with daily living activities benefit from Veteran’s Home Care. NEILS is contracted with Veteran’s Home Care to ensure veterans receive the care they need while remaining in a familiar environment. Through this in-home program, eligible veterans can access services such as personal care assistance, respite care, and companionship. This initiative honors the sacrifices by our veterans and promotes their continued independence.

Nursing Home Transition: A Path Back Home

Our Nursing Home Transition program supports individuals wishing to leave a nursing home and transition back into the community. The process of transitioning out of a nursing facility can be complex, but we offer guidance on housing, financial assistance and in-home services to facilitate a smooth move. This program empowers individuals by giving them the option to regain control over their living situation and receive care in a setting of their choice.

Your healthcare preferences should be known and respected, regardless of your age. National Healthcare Decisions Day encourages everyone to plan ahead and communicate their wishes for medical care. 

Here are a few ways you can start preparing for the future:

• Discuss your healthcare preferences with family, friends, and healthcare providers.
• Complete legal documents such as advance directives (living wills, healthcare proxies, etc.) that outline preferences for medical treatment in the event you cannot speak for yourself.
